It is said that Onna Kaido was named as a bypassing avenue of old Nakasendo, one of the main inter-prefecture roads in ancient Edo era, and it was named so because it was often used by women who cannot pass through the old prefecture border checking station of Usui Pass.
At present, it is a main town road that is popular among town residents and visitors as a back road that leads from the Usui Karuizawa Interchange on the Joshinetsu Expressway to Naka Karuizawa Kariyado area. Open green landscapes such as golf courses and vegetable fields spread along the roadside. Kazakoshi Park, which became one of the 1998 Nagano Olympic Games facilities for carling competition, opened in 1990, and then in 2016, the Hotchi Ichiba, a farmers’ market that sells highland vegetables, opened along the side of this Onna Kaido. In the coming spring of 2020, Karuizawa Kazakoshi Gakuen, a kindergarten to junior high integrated school, will open on the north side of the Onna Kaido at west side of the Karuizawa 72 Golf North Course. The roadside with golf courses and vegetable fields scenery is about to change dramatically.
This property is a bright flat land lot near the intersection with the cenotaph (aka Cornerstone of Security) of the Asama Sanso incident in 1972, being located about 500 meters from the intersection of Prince Street and Onna Kaido. It was once used as a field for growing potatoes, but is now a vacant land. Facing the Onna Kaido, it has good access to expressway entrance, JR Karuizawa Station, and Naka Karuizawa zone, too. Though it does not have the atmosphere of "in the forest", which is actually common in other areas of Karuizawa, it is a bright land and has convenience for living.
